JOB SUMMARY: SOFTWARE ENGINEER

The Software Engineer is a critical role within the ABC Owned Television Stations’ (ABC OTV) Digital Media Product Development Team. ABC OTV is comprised of 8 TV Stations and a National Sales Division with critical reach in major U.S. cities.

Our ABC OTV digital media business consists of 13 web sites, multiple digital channels, and multiple mobile products (iPhone apps, iPad apps, Android apps, Blackberry apps, WAP sites). Our Seattle-based digital media product development team is responsible for the design, development, and support of the evolving ABC OTV digital media products and business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Software Engineer’s responsibilities include:
• Work closely with Senior Software Engineers and Web Developers to support and build robust, next-generation web applications.
• Provide sustainment engineering support for the various applications that comprise our digital products.
• Specialize in building responsive and elegant web UIs with AJAX and similar technologies.
• Manage availability, latency, scalability and efficiency of services by engineering quality software.
• Use your knowledge of Internet technologies, devices, and platforms to improve the lives of our growing base of users.
• Respond to and resolve service problems; write software and build automation to prevent problem recurrence.
• Participate in service capacity planning and demand forecasting, software performance analysis and system tuning.

As a Software Engineer working on our critical production applications and infrastructure, your mission will be to ensure our products are always fast, available, scalable and engineered to withstand unexpected demand. You will be driving performance and reliability from software and infrastructure. You will tackle challenging situations every day and work with other product development and engineering teams across our organization. The most successful candidates for this role will have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, fluency in coding and systems design, solid communication skills and a desire to tackle very complex problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience
Required:
• B.S. in computer science or related field (or equivalent experience). M.S. preferred.
• 3+ years experience in software design, development, and implementation.
• Positive track record delivering successful web applications through the full product lifecycle (e.g. requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment, documentation).
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize effectively, and quickly adapt to new development environments and changing business requirements, learn new systems, and find creative and scalable solutions to challenging problems.
• Strong quantitative and analytical abilities with deep understanding of IP delivery of digital media assets.
• Near flawless organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to excel individually and on a team.
• Highly diplomatic, with the ability to evangelize the merits of new and existing products and technologies to diverse audiences ranging from senior executives to developers.
• A strong sense of drive, ownership, passion and a commitment to technology and the user experience.
• Demonstrated skill in motivating and unifying individuals around a common purpose.

Preferred:
• Familiarity with Apple’s Mac OS X and iOS application architecture and experience developing Apple-specific applications for iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices using Objective-C.
• Experience with other mobile SDKs, including Android SDK, or Web OS.
• Deep understanding and/or interest in social media and social platforms.
• Experience and/or strong interest in designing and creating mobile applications.
• Experience building digital media products and platforms which include elements of digital rights management, storage, streaming, caching, etc.
• Experience using, designing, and implementing complex architectural frameworks for digital media products.
• Experience, knowledge, and/or deep interest in the television industry or news business are highly valued.

Skills & Abilities
Required:
• Experience with one or more object oriented programming languages (C++, Java, Objective-C).
• Practical experience with: XHTML, HTML5, XML/XSLT, JavaScript, CSS, web standards, AJAX, ActionScript (Flash), .NET (Silverlight), PHP, DOM, JSON, and other server/client-side scripting languages, protocols, and open source and emerging web technologies.
• Experience with Web services - both SOAP-based services and RESTful services.
• Passion for creating new and compelling products is critical.

Preferred:
• Understanding and experience with agile software development methodology.

Education
Required:
• B.S. in computer science or related field (or equivalent experience).

Preferred:
• Advanced degree (M.S.) in computer science or related field.
